Inlays & Onlays | Dentist Grand Rapids, MI
Did you know that silver amalgam fillings expand and contract with fluctuating temperatures?
This means that every time you sip hot coffee or indulge in ice cream, the metal fillings in your mouth are slightly moving. This movement can let in bacteria and lead to further decay, which is why more and more patients are asking our Grand Rapids cosmetic dentist about dental inlays and onlays.
Candidates for Inlays and Onlays
If you have tooth decay or similar structural damage to the tooth, you may want to consider the benefits of inlays and onlays. Inlays and onlays are an alternative to the more invasive dental crown procedure, which covers the entire visible surface of the tooth above the gum line. Inlays and onlays can also be an alternative to direct fillings.
How Inlays and Onlays Work
Inlays and onlays are tooth-colored restorations made in a lab to fit the shape of your teeth. The procedure is broken up into two visits to our cosmetic dental practice. During the first visit, your tooth will be prepared by removing tooth enamel affected by decay. Our family dentist will then take dental impressions that will be sent to the lab where your dental restoration will be made.
During your second appointment, the inlay or onlay will be bonded to the surface of your teeth to give you the appearance and function of natural tooth enamel. Many of our patients appreciate the whiter smiles that inlays and onlays give them. These dental restorations also give your teeth strength and durability.
